New research shows that US teenagers who drink even one energy drink a week are more likely to binge on alcohol.
Binge drinking is defined as consuming six or more drinks in a single sitting.
The Journal of Paediatrics published a recent study that showed that US teenagers who consumed energy drinks were more likely to start experimenting with alcohol from as young as 12.
Researchers at the University of Dartmouth's Norris Cotton Cancer Centre said energy drinks, specifically those containing caffeine, could lessen teenagers' awareness of their drunkenness.
"Caffeine counters the depressant effects of alcohol, increasing alertness and leading to a longer timeframe of drinking," according to the researchers' report.
"These findings are concerning," said Dartmouth researcher and doctor Jennifer Emond.
"Given that underage drinking is a sensitive issue, it's possible that clinicians, parents, and teachers might open dialogues about alcohol use by starting the discussion on the topic of energy drinks."
Researchers cited older findings that energy-drink consumption by teenagers was an indicator of whether they had used cigarettes, dagga or amphetamines in the past 30 days.
Energy drinks are very popular with younger South Africans.
A study by Analytix in 2012 found that 6million South Africans had drunk at least one energy drink in the week before the survey.
It also found that more than 70% of this country's energy-drink consumers were between 15 and 39 years old.

Protesters burned a man alive in Burundi's capital yesterday, saying he was a member of the ruling party's youth wing, which had attacked them during their demonstrations against the president's bid for a third term, a witness said.

Protesters have been on Bujumbura's streets for almost two weeks, often hurling stones at the police, whom they say have fired live rounds at them. The police deny this.
Opponents of the government say the June 26 presidential election should be delayed by a few weeks because of the unrest.
President Pierre Nkurunziza's spokesman said a delay was unnecessary because most of the country was calm.
The violence has plunged the nation into its worst crisis since the end of a civil war in 2005 that pitted the ethnic Hutu majority against the powerful Tutsi minority.
"They put tyres around his neck and then burnt him," a witness said in the Nyakabiga district of Bujumbura.
Local media also reported the incident and the Red Cross said a man was killed in Nyakabiga but, in line with its usual practice, did not say how he died. It said a woman was killed in another area yesterday.
Protesters said the victim of the burning was a member of the Imbonerakure youth wing of the ruling CNDD-FDD party, which they say has attacked them. The government has repeatedly dismissed charges that Imbonerakure is fomenting violence.
Condemning the killing, presidential spokesman Gervais Abayeho said: "We don't want the situation to degenerate and take us back to those years when people were killed on the streets in broad daylight."
Activists say at least 14 people have been killed since the protests erupted. Police give lower figures.
Several opposition figures say the vote should be delayed, provided that the parliamentary and presidential elections now scheduled for May and June are held before Nkurunziza's current term expires on August 26.
"It is needed," said presidential hopeful Agathon Rwasa, who, like Nkurunziza, once led a Hutu rebel group. "There is no security."
The country's constitution and peace agreement limit a president to two five-year terms.
A constitutional court ruled on Tuesday Nkurunziza's first term began when he was elected by lawmakers, not when he won a general election.
Nkurunziza called the protests an "insurrection".

Man spends night cheating with smallhouse, attempts suicide after finding wife having sex with boyfriend

A MAN from Victoria Falls lied and said he was spending the night at a funeral wake while he visited a girlfriend. He attempted suicide when he returned home on the following day and found his wife sleeping with a boyfriend in their matrimonial bedroom.

The "comedy of horrors" unfolded last Friday at a house in Chinotimba suburb where bewildered residents gathered to watch as Mbuso Sithole walked in on his wife Sgcebhe Moyo and her boyfriend who were having a good time.

The boyfriend, only identified as Ra, has since fled the resort town.

Sithole, 31, has his mother – a nurse at St Patrick's Hospital in Hwange – to thank as she rushed with an antidote for the rat poison he drank after he found his wife in a compromising position.

The mother had to quickly leave her workplace to save him as there was reportedly no medicine at Victoria Falls District Hospital.

Sithole, a vendor popularly known as Maburawa Gadaffi at the Comesa Market Centre in the resort town, told The Chronicle it pained him to find out that his wife was unfaithful.

He said as he slunk home from his girlfriend's house at about 5AM he felt something was amiss when his wife took long to open the door.

"The next thing, the window opened and a half naked man whom I recognised as Ra, shot out and sprinted away before I could react," said Sithole.

"Yes, it's true that I wanted to commit suicide as I drank rat poison. I've a girlfriend called Blessing Chiedza Banda and on Thursday I told my wife that I was going to a funeral wake when actually I was going to sleep over at her place."

Sithole said he got infuriated when his wife denied anyone had been in the house and suggested that he could have seen a burglar.

"We fought but she vehemently denied that she had a boyfriend in the house. We even went to the house where Ra stays but he fled and he hasn't returned since that day. I suspect he has left town," said a dejected looking Sithole.

He said as they were arguing, one of their neighbours called his wife and told her he had spent the night with his girlfriend.

Sithole said his wife went ballistic and threatened to kill herself.

"I told her that it was better for me to kill myself as well because I'd found a man in our house. That's when I rushed to the Old Market where I bought rat poison which I put in a glass of water. I gulped it and locked myself in the bedroom," said Sithole.

He said Moyo alerted neighbours who forced their way into the house through the window before rushing him to hospital.

Sithole said his mother saved his life after his wife was told there was no medication at Victoria Falls Hospital.

"I wanted to kill myself because I couldn't imagine my wife having a boyfriend," he added.

When The Chronicle caught up with Moyo, she said she had reconciled with her husband.

Moyo said her husband's girlfriend Banda was the one causing problems in her marriage.

The couple later granted a joint interview in which they said they'd put their problems behind them.

Neighbours said Sithole could have saved his marriage by drinking poison as his "near death experience" seemed to have brought the couple closer.

Sithole was discharged from hospital on Sunday.

Gondolosi is used for delayed ejacul*tion and would make men go for more than five fours of sex. This would be very ideal for men whose wives are cheating on them. Surely after 6 hours of non-stop sex she will; never cheat again!

For women, tseketseke is said to be the 'extra sweetener'. We hope prostitutes and small houses won't get hold of this product, otherwise many married men, and maybe some of these well known prophets might end up cheating on their wives too much!

"Tseketseke improves women's sexual desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and also records less comfort and pain during sex. Tseketseke also makes women 'hot in bed'," Kamanga the sex 'lecturer' said.

In a bid to avoid serious trouble, Kamanga urges non-married and single men and women to stay away from her products because she says they are extremely powerful such that they might end up raping anything that comes along their way, chickens, dogs or donkeys etc.
